Ronald McDonald House Charities South West NSW (based in Wagga Wagga) is part of the global RMHC family – a network of Houses that began with the first Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia in 1974 and came to Australia in 1981 to support families of seriously ill children.
In March 2005, the Ronald McDonald House in Wagga Wagga opened its doors as a “home away from home” for families from the Riverina, South West Slopes and surrounding regions whose children were receiving medical treatment in the city. Located just minutes from Wagga Wagga Base Hospital and Calvary Hospital, the House provides free accommodation and essential support so parents and carers can stay close to their child during treatment – easing the emotional and financial strain of being away from home.
Over the years, the House has become a vital part of the community, offering not just a place to stay but a supportive environment where families connect, rest and find strength together in challenging times.
RMHC Global History
Our first Ronald McDonald House opened in Philadelphia, PA, USA, in 1974, after recognising the need for parents to stay close to their hospitalised child. As we opened more House Programs around the world, it became clear that caring for the family of a sick child was as important as caring for the child.
That was the beginning of our unique role as a children’s charity, enabling, supporting and facilitating family-centered care. Our Ronald McDonald House Programs, located near top children’s hospitals, allow parents who are far from home to stay close to their hospitalised child and benefit from the comforts of home without incurring hotel and food costs.
Ronald McDonald Family Room Programs offer a quiet respite for all families right in the hospital. And Ronald McDonald Care Mobile Programs bring fundamental medical and dental care to undeserved communities.
